The records document the effect of war timeemergency measures on student religious work on college and university campusesthroughout the United States during the years 1942 to 1944. The War EmergencyCouncil on Student Christian Work was established in 1942 to deal with thereadjustments made necessary by the impact of World War II on college anduniversity campuses. The Council collected and disseminated information,arranged regional consultative conferences, and worked as an intermediarybetween the United States military establishment and student religiousmovements.

Clarence Prouty Shedd was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1887. He received the B.A. degree in 1909 and the M.A. degree in 1914, both from Clark University, and earned a B.D. in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1932 from Yale University. Shedd was awarded a L.H.D. in 1951 from Clark University and a D.D. in 1966 from Pacific School of Religion. He was a lecturer at Yale University from 1923-1926, an assistant professor from 1926-1928, an associate professor from 1928-1939, and a professor from 1939-1955....
